Hey Fort Smith — this is a developing one, and right now there are still more questions than answers.
A body was found in the Poteau River Friday morning near Fort Smith, with the discovery reported on the Oklahoma side of the state line in LeFlore County.
Fort Smith first responders assisted Oklahoma authorities with recovering the body from the water.
As of Friday night, authorities have not publicly released the person’s identity, cause of death or exactly how the person ended up in the river.
So before this turns into everybody on Facebook trying to solve the case from their couch, there really isn’t enough confirmed information yet to say what happened.
There is no official information I’ve found saying this was a homicide.
There is no official information saying it was an accidental drowning either.
Right now, the accurate version is pretty simple: a person was found deceased in the Poteau River, the body was recovered, and investigators are working to determine the identity and circumstances surrounding the death.
The Poteau River runs right along our western edge before joining the Arkansas River near Belle Point in downtown Fort Smith.
That stretch of river is also part of the Arkansas-Oklahoma boundary, which helps explain why an incident there can involve agencies from both sides of the state line.
According to reporting from 5NEWS, Fort Smith first responders were involved in the recovery along with Oklahoma authorities.
Once a body is recovered in a situation like this, investigators still have several basic questions to answer.
Who is the person?
How long were they in the water?
Where did they actually enter the river?
And most importantly, what caused the death?
Those answers usually come from investigators, identification work and the medical examiner — not from somebody recognizing a rumor being shared online.
I’ve already seen an unverified website attaching a name to the incident, but I’m intentionally leaving that out.
Until law enforcement, the medical examiner or another reliable local source confirms an identity, putting somebody’s name in the headline would be irresponsible.
Same goes for guessing whether foul play was involved.
A body being found in a river sounds suspicious because, obviously, it gets your attention. But there are plenty of possible explanations, and investigators haven’t publicly settled on one.
For local residents, there doesn’t appear to be any public-safety warning connected to the discovery at this point.
Authorities haven’t announced that they’re searching for a suspect, warned residents about an ongoing threat or asked the public to avoid a broader area because of the investigation.
That could always change if investigators learn something new, but as of Friday night, this is being handled as a death investigation rather than some active danger to the public.
The next meaningful update will probably be one of three things: authorities identify the person, the medical examiner determines a cause or manner of death, or investigators release information explaining how the person ended up in the river.
Until then, anything more dramatic than that is basically speculation.
