Hey River Valley — if you’re trying to figure out something cheap to do tonight, this one’s pretty easy. The Sebastian County Fair officially opens today, Tuesday, August 25, at the fairgrounds in Greenwood, and opening-night admission is only $1.
Gates open at 5 p.m. at the Sebastian County Fairgrounds, 530 E. Knoxville Street in Greenwood. The fair runs through Saturday, August 29, with the carnival, youth rodeo, livestock shows and auction, exhibits, vendors, food trucks, live music and free inflatables for the kids.
And just so nobody gets confused when they get there: the dollar is the gate admission. It doesn’t mean you’re getting carnival rides, games and funnel cakes for a buck. Once you walk through those gates, your wallet is between you and your kids.
Still, compared with what it costs to take a family almost anywhere anymore, $1 just to get everybody inside and walk around makes Tuesday a pretty solid night to go check the fair out.
The fair’s official event page lists Tuesday as its special dollar-admission night. Regular admission later in the week is posted at $7 for adults, while Wednesday is another discounted night with Faith & Family Night priced at $5 for adults and $3 for children at the ticket booth.
If you’re coming from Fort Smith, Greenwood is close enough that this doesn’t have to turn into some big planned-out trip. Head down after work, walk around for a couple hours, grab something to eat and let the kids burn some energy before heading home.
The carnival is obviously going to be one of the big draws, but the Sebastian County Fair is more than rides and games. The fair association says its mission is centered around agriculture and creative arts education, especially for local youth.
That’s why you’ll see livestock competitions, exhibits and youth activities mixed in with the midway. A lot of the kids showing animals or entering projects have spent months getting ready for this week.
The association also puts money back into premiums, prizes and scholarships for local youth, so there’s an actual community side to the fair that gets lost sometimes when everybody is focused on carnival rides and food.
This year’s official lineup includes a youth rodeo, livestock shows and auction, live music, vendors, food trucks, exhibits and free kids’ play inflatables. Rodeo events are also scheduled later in the week, including Friday and Saturday nights.
If you’re going tonight, getting there sometime around opening probably isn’t a bad move, especially with the $1 admission likely bringing out families who might normally wait until later in the week.
And if you’ve got younger kids, honestly, just walking them through the livestock barns and letting them see the animals can be half the entertainment before you even make it over to the rides.
Fort Smith gets plenty of bigger events, but stuff like the county fair is still one of those River Valley traditions where you end up running into somebody you know every twenty feet. Greenwood, Fort Smith, Mansfield, Hackett, Barling — everybody kind of ends up in the same place for a few nights.
So if you’re sitting around Tuesday afternoon wondering what to do after dinner, this might be the move. You’re not committing to some expensive ticket before you even know whether the kids are going to have fun.
