Hey Fort Smith — tonight’s Board of Directors study session has been canceled

Hey Fort Smith — quick heads-up before anybody makes a pointless trip downtown tonight. The Fort Smith Board of Directors study session scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, has been canceled.

The city’s official meetings-and-agendas page was updated Tuesday and now clearly shows “Board of Directors Study Session CANCELED” for tonight’s meeting. The city also lists a separate media notification announcing the cancellation.

So if you were planning to head downtown, watch the meeting online or catch one of the directors before or after the session, don’t plan your evening around it. There won’t be a normal Board study session tonight.

There is one slightly confusing part worth mentioning. Fort Smith’s older Granicus meeting portal was still showing the August 25 study session as an upcoming 6 p.m. meeting when we checked Tuesday afternoon. But the city’s main current meetings page has officially changed the listing to canceled.

Basically, if you looked online earlier and saw a meeting scheduled, you weren’t imagining things. The city’s updated page is the one to go by now.

Study sessions are different from the Board’s regular voting meetings. They’re generally used for directors to dig into city projects, finances, policies and other issues before something eventually comes back for formal action. Residents can also follow those discussions to get an early look at what City Hall is working on.

The city’s current schedule shows the next regular Board of Directors meeting for Tuesday, September 1 at 6 p.m. Another study session is currently listed for September 8.

Fort Smith hasn’t posted a replacement time for tonight’s canceled session on its current meeting calendar, so don’t assume it’s just been moved a couple hours or shifted somewhere else tonight.

Community takeaway: No Fort Smith Board study session tonight. If you were going downtown for the 6 p.m. meeting, save yourself the trip. The city’s official current calendar marks the August 25 session canceled, with the next regular Board meeting currently scheduled for September 1.

The Grizzlies scored 28 points in the first quarter and added 20 in the third quarter in sprinting to a 77-64 win against Bentonville in 6A-West play at Northside Arena. Northside (13-12, 4-8) will host rival Southside on Monday, a day earlier than originally scheduled due to a predicted winter storm. Friday, Derek Shepard scored 14 of his game-high 32 points in the opening quarter leading thew Grizzlies to an 18-4 lead five minutes into the game, 23-6 six minutes in, and a 28-15 lead after the quarter.
