Hey Fort Smith — here's one for Saturday that's actually useful if you've got kids or just want to see what local services are available without driving all over town.
The 4th Annual Celebration for Community Connections is happening Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Darby Middle School, 616 N. 14th Street in Fort Smith.
Admission is free.
And the event is open to students, families and the entire community.
This isn't just another room full of organizations handing you brochures.
The event brings schools, healthcare providers, community agencies and emergency-preparedness partners together in one place with things residents can actually use while they're there.
Organizers are advertising free health screenings, free haircuts, food, family activities, door prizes, community resources, volunteer opportunities and emergency-preparedness information.
The free haircuts alone could be worth the trip for families with multiple kids.
Throw in the health screenings and you're basically getting a chance to knock out a couple things Saturday morning without making separate appointments or spending extra money.
And because there'll be food, games and family activities going on too, parents aren't trying to keep kids entertained while walking through three hours of informational tables.
There's also something new this year specifically for teenagers.
Organizers are adding a dedicated Teen Zone for middle- and high-school students.
The Teen Zone is supposed to connect young people with local programs, clubs and opportunities involving education, careers, leadership and wellness.
There'll also be interactive activities and a supervised space where teens can spend time with friends.
That's actually more useful than it may sound.
Fort Smith has plenty of programs for young people, but finding them can be a mess.
One gets announced through school.
Another one lives on somebody's Facebook page.
Another opportunity gets shared around after registration has already closed.
Putting several organizations in one place gives families a chance to see what's actually available without having to hunt for everything separately.
Emergency-preparedness partners will also be part of the event.
That gives residents a chance to get information about preparing for storms, emergencies and other disruptions before there's an actual emergency happening.
And nobody needs to turn Saturday into an emergency-management seminar.
If you're already there with the kids, spending a few minutes learning which local agencies and resources exist can save a lot of confusion later.
That's really why this event makes the cut for us.
Fort Smith has plenty of festivals, fundraisers and promotional events.
Not every one of them needs another post.
This one has an actual practical payoff.
You could save money on a haircut.
Get basic health information.
Find services your family didn't know existed.
Find opportunities for your teenager.
Get some emergency-preparedness information.
Eat.
Let the kids have something to do.
And you're not paying admission just to walk through the door.
