Hey Fort Smith — Christmas feels a long way off when it's still pushing 100 degrees outside, but for families who may need help with gifts this year, one of the important dates starts tomorrow.
The Salvation Army's Fort Smith Angel Tree application period opens Friday, Sept. 18.
United Way of Fort Smith Area posted the local opening date and says families looking for registration information should contact The Salvation Army at 479-783-6145.
That's the main thing worth knowing right now because this isn't the part of Angel Tree where people pull tags off Christmas trees and shop for kids.
This is the family application side.
If your household may need Christmas assistance this year, this is when you start finding out how to get your child registered.
Don't wait until the Angel Trees show up in stores.
A lot of people only think about Angel Tree once those paper tags start appearing on Christmas trees around town.
By then, families have already had to apply.
The Salvation Army's Angel Tree program matches children in need with donors who purchase new clothing and toys for Christmas.
Nationally, The Salvation Army says its Angel Tree program helps provide Christmas gifts to more than one million children in a typical year.

It does not currently publish whether Fort Smith registration will be completed online, by appointment, in person or through some combination of those.
There's also some information we do NOT have yet.
We're not going to copy eligibility rules from another Salvation Army city and pretend they automatically apply here.
Different Salvation Army commands can have different age limits, income requirements, service areas, application windows and document requirements.

It doesn't publish a local income threshold.
It doesn't give a final application deadline.

Why are we putting this out in September?
Because November is when people suddenly start thinking:
“Christmas is six weeks away and I need help.”
By then, holiday-assistance organizations may already be deep into registration, matching children with donors and preparing distribution.
That doesn't mean Fort Smith's program will immediately fill up — the local announcement doesn't say that, and we're not going to pretend it does.
But there's absolutely no benefit in waiting if you already know Christmas is going to be financially rough this year.
Groceries are expensive.
Rent is expensive.
Utilities are expensive.
Kids don't stop needing shoes and clothes because December showed up.
And plenty of working families can be doing everything they're supposed to do and still not have several hundred extra dollars sitting around for Christmas.
That's exactly why programs like Angel Tree exist.
How does Angel Tree work after families are accepted?
The exact Fort Smith process will come from the local Salvation Army, but the basic Angel Tree model is straightforward.
Once children are accepted into the program, their gift information is used to create Angel Tree tags.
Donors select those children and purchase requested items such as toys and clothing.
Those gifts are returned through participating locations or Salvation Army collection points.
The Salvation Army then distributes the gifts to participating families so parents and caregivers can put them under their own Christmas tree.
In other words, tomorrow's application opening is the beginning of the process that eventually creates the Angel Tree tags people will see around town later this fall.
There are really two groups that should save this information.
The first is obvious:
Parents or guardians who may need Christmas assistance.
Call and find out whether you qualify and what paperwork is required.
The second group is everybody who eventually wants to help.
You don't need to do anything today.
The donor side comes later.
When Fort Smith Angel Tree adoptions begin, residents will be able to select children and shop for their Christmas needs.
