Fort Smith Approves Data Center Ordinance, but the Conversation Isn’t Over

Fort Smith has taken a step toward setting rules for data centers, but city leaders aren’t ready to call the issue settled. The Board of Directors approved a data center ordinance, while also signaling that it wants stronger restrictions. That means the new rules are a starting point—not necessarily the final word on how these facilities should be built and operated in the city. Data centers can bring investment and economic activity, but they can also raise questions about land use, utilities, noise and the effects on nearby neighborhoods. Those are the kinds of concerns local rules may need to address as Fort Smith considers future projects. The board’s decision reflects a balancing act: creating a framework for data center development while leaving room to tighten protections. The specific restrictions still to be considered will matter, especially for residents trying to understand what new projects could mean for their community. For now, Fort Smith has an ordinance in place—and a clear signal from its board that more discussion is ahead.
